i was sad to get the email last week
that borders is going out of business.
i'm a page turner.
always have been, always will be.
i know i can click and ship, but it's not the same experience as browsing the shelves, flipping thru the pages
to make sure the print isn't too small,
reading the back cover...
tragic.
almost as tragic as amy winehouse.
her music will live on in my car.
It is kind of sad that bookstores are becoming a rarity. We are big fans of the library though! I have fought the trend with the digital reading. There's nothing like a book and the smell of the pages. that's my inner nerd coming out :)
ReplyDeleteYes, so sad about bookstores. Though I hardly go anymore, I loved the experience during my college days: books, coffee, friends... Luckily, Ann Patchet lives in Nashville and decided to open up a local bookstore...

I am a page turner as well...very old school..I also want to hold newspapers in my hand. Hopefully, not all bookstores will go away. We have some here called HALF PRICE books..resale..and amazing!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, love actual books. Turning the page and the smell of a new book! Oh well. :(
ReplyDeletebtw - Love this image, so clever!

Yes, the demise of Borders is sad to me too...perhaps because of what it says about the state of reading in our culture. Reading online is not the same as turning the pages of a book.
ReplyDeleteI know, it's so depressing to see bookstores disappear like that. I've always been such a fan of just browsing.
ReplyDeleteI did finally get a library card, though, so maybe that can fill some of the browsing void?
PS: That picture is just a bit scary :)
I was in Borders for what could be my last time this weekend and almost cried. Mr. A compared waiting in the checkout line to a funeral procession -- as if we were paying our last respects to Borders.
ReplyDeleteThen I did cry.
I'm such a pansy.

I love love love going and browsing borders and just taking an hour out of the day to pick out the next book I'm going to read. But I got a Kindle and honestly I LOVE IT. I love that the instant I hear about a book I can download it. I always hated going into the book store and forgetting all the books i wanted to read the second I walked in!

Thats so sad, I love reading and physically going to the bookstore is so much more fun!! Especially because they give suggestions and sometimes you can find hidden gems. That sucks!
ReplyDeleteps. That last picture makes me laugh so hard

I was pretty thrown by Amy Winehouse too- I think a lot of it had to do with her age, that she's only a year older than me. Plus, she was incredibly talented and its just a sad story. I'm sorry for Borders but glad there are still other bookstores out there!
ReplyDeleteit makes me very sad to hear that borders is going out of business (i live in sydney)
ReplyDeleteof course, here i can't afford new books so get to spend my time roaming through used book stores or saturday markets looking for a new read which i enjoy very much with a hot chocolate in hand
i wanted to thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment! get some gold nail polish, it's too much fun!

Spending time in bookstores is one of my favourite things to do, so I know how you feel :)
ReplyDeleteThe post itself is sad, but the picture made me laugh! =)
ReplyDeleteI prefer bookstores too! I never order books online! Too sad for Amy Winehouse too. I didn't approve her life but she had a nice voice and she was too young to die.
ReplyDeleteYou picture however is great! I love it.
It always breaks my heart whenever I hear bookstores closing, much more when they're local shops. I am obsessed with books. I mean, I have more books than I have clothes. OK maybe that's not true, but it's close enough. :)
ReplyDeleteFunny pic!

LOL - briliant pic - love it! Sorry one of your fav stores is closing :(
ReplyDeleteToo bad it's closing down. Though honestly I have never read books in a bookshop/library. I'm always used to taking them home with me.
ReplyDeleteSO sad it's closing down, but you'll find another bookstore soon. Way much much better. The photo caught my attention :)) Love your blog.

Love this picture! I too am sad about Borders but do own a Kindle. I love books and I like that I can have hundreds all in one. Hate to see ANYONE(book related or not) go out of business though :(
I agree with you. In a world of Kindle, ipads and Nooks, I still enjoy the printed word. It is sad.
ReplyDeleteBTW - This is a cool pic.
