rainy season.

happy veteran's day to all who served and serve today.

a few years ago, my office swapped veteran's day for black friday, so i'm stuck at the office today. it's ok, though, i like quiet days at the office. this weekend was rainy, windy, and cold...yay! i can finally break out the scarves and make use of all of my sweaters.

how did you spend the day?

style me. striped maxi skirt.

reader request:
my sister bought a black and white striped maxi skirt similar to this one and needed ideas on how to wear it to work.
"style me!!" she said. so here are my thoughts:
since she is in a management position, she should continue to look professional even on casual days. my suggestion is to pair her striped maxi skirt with a shrunken blazer that is structured and short in length. the shorter length balances the maxi and keeps the look from being too frumpy. i might also pair it with silky button-ups or crisp white shirts that are tucked
in and belted.

her skirt has thin stripes and almost looks solid black from afar, which works out better for the office. this is the only striped maxi skirt i have, but you get the idea.

maxi + tank + blazer

maxi + crisp white shirt

maxi + long-sleeved dolman tee

maxi + peplum top

maxi + peplum top + blazer

tips for keeping your maxi skirt office appropriate:
- avoid loose oversized tops which can look sloppy and too casual
- skirt should cover shoes without touching the ground
- keep the outfit simple and unfussy
- stick to [dark] basic colors
- avoid large prints

east vs west [coast] style. chunky knits.

welcome to the final week of the East vs West [Coast] Style collaboration. over the last four weeks, we showcased some of our favorite fall trends including leopard, leather, and booties. this time, we even had a chance to wear the same items, giving you the opportunity to see one item styled six ways. as always, it was interesting to see how location and lifestyle influenced style across the states. we're signing off with chunky knits from Lulu's, and these pretty necklaces from Libi & Lola.

i love sweaters, but the temps are still warm here during fall.
pairing them with shorts keeps things comfortable.

say it with a [graphic] tee.

i've always had a love-hate relationship with t-shirts,
because the fit, material, and length have to be just right. and while i never used to wear much of them, they have been at the top of my wishlist recently for several reasons:
1) they are great layering pieces
2) they are versatile; can be dressed up or down
3) they are comfortable
in particular, neutral colors (especially grays) with simple sayings or graphics have been on my radar. i recently ordered this one from madewell only to find that it is back ordered until january! so i was ecstatic to [coincidentally] receive this one from my friends over at sisters marie. we didn't get a full length picture, but i am wearing my sole society skylar boots. the collage shows a couple ways i will be wearing my tees.

do you wear tees? do you keep them casual or dress them up?

a week of red heels. stripes.

i'm ending this week of red heels with stripes.
i was worried red stripes would be too matchy with red shoes, but i think bringing in a third color, the camel [bag], nicely balances the red + white. so what did i learn from this week of red heels? i learned that bold red shoes are very versatile!

can we talk about this bag? isn't it JustFab?
no, really, it's JustFab's Gallerista. it's another fave for two reasons...it's soft, and more importantly, it's not heavy. it also comes in black and burgundy which i'm considering for fall.

have a great weekend.

a week of stripes. details.

it's no secret that i love stripes...
and it's been a while since i've done a week of,
so this week it's all about stripes.
a basic, black and white, long-sleeved tee is a great wardrobe staple. it's a nice layering piece, but also works well on its own. i have several that are very similar, but sometimes a fun detail is what sets one apart from the rest.
think zippers, bows, cut-outs, or elbow patches!

check back this week for more stripey goodness.
how much do you love stripes?

jobsite.

it's not uncommon for me to wear shoes to work. days when i have to go to a jobsite, it's comfortable (and most times a requirement) to wear covered shoes. unfortunately, most of my jeans are long, and it's always a struggle to find something to wear. in addition, i'm stuck feeling too casual and frumpy when i return to the office. so a simple switch to my black coated denims was my solution. rolled up and paired with a long sleeve tee, i feel casual enough to walk around a construction site, and i can throw on my black heels and feel pulled together back in the office. this roomy uptown tote has tons of room for my notebook, drawings, camera, and tape measure.

it's much easier to dress up than to dress down...don't you think?

my friend gave me a zipfizz to try after our walk yesterday. supposedly it's loaded with vitamin b to give you energy.
i liked the taste of this one.

top gun.

new white denim, but this time heavily distressed. worn with a loose tee (in black, white, or gray), heels, and a utility jacket, this has been my most recent go-to. we had flash flood warnings again this weekend, so this jacket has again proved its worth...and i like that. even though my closet is full,
there are only a few things that i constantly reach for. i'm slowly transforming my closet so that it is full of things
i love to wear.

i had another busy weekend which i'll share throughout the week. i participated in our local march for babies walk on saturday morning. it was a casual 5 mile walk from waikiki to ala moana and back. this is the second walk we participated in this year, and we're already looking forward to the next...because exercising while supporting great causes makes you feel pretty top gun.

what has you feeling top gun?

post-walk swag and grub...chocolate milk, fried rice,
and a handful of snacks.
