nature's stairclimber.

the koko crater stairs follow the track of an incline tram system that used to transport supplies to a lookout station in the world war II-era. there are approximately 1,100 steps to the top. it attracts unsuspecting tourists who have no idea what lies ahead (or above, i should say), and has become a popular workout for many locals....hawaii's natural stairclimber.
i did this a couple of times in 2010, and when my workout group said that they wanted to include this as a regular activity, i knew i had to get prepared. so i took mini-she early saturday morning. this was her first time.

driving in, you can see the trail.
it's quite a hike just to get to the trail.
all smiles at the start.
it begins.
400...this is when you ask yourself WHY you're doing this.
mini on the verge of throwing up.
after resting for a while, she pushed on.
the bridge.
after the bridge begins the super steep incline to the top.
the section i call...death.
1,000...the light at the end of the tunnel.
the natural air conditioning and views make it all worth it.
view of hanauma bay.
view of hawaii kai.
looking down.
can be tricky coming down when your legs feel like jello.
look at this cute guy blazing down!
 woohoo! feeling good.
next stop? lunch!
poke salad.

as luck would have it, the gang chose the
stairs for our tuesday workout.
twice in one week.
no, twice in four days.

Wow that looks so stunning and like such a workout. I would probably be terrified climbing down. But the views do look stunning.

Wow! The view is breathtaking. I've climbed 1000 stairs when I was in Nafplio on my vacations a few years ago. Not easy at all. And the coming down part is always the most difficult.
That bridge part creeps me out a bit. That would be the most difficult part for me I guess.
And mini-she, is not mini at all! She's the same height as you! Didn't expect that! :)

omg, your mini-she is super tall!!! I totally thought your minis were tiny! :) Looks like it was a great way to spend your day! I totally wish the weather was that gorgeous right now. I'd love to go for a long hike!

This is SO intense!! So amazing that you guys did this, the view is absolutely worth it, and I bet it's an amazing workout. When I was in Greece we walked up and down 1000 steps to get to this castle on the top of this mountain and it was ridiculous!!! What fun for you and mini she :)

It is just SO beautiful! I have only been to Hawaii once...for our honeymoon. Still dreaming of going back one day.
Your little is almost as tall as you!! Just like my oldest. They will tower over us soon. Sigh.

Good for you! I remember climbing Diamond Head when I was in Hawaii and almost popping a lung and dying of heat exhaustion! Great workout though!!

So cool! I wanna go all the way up there!

Fashionable Rose said...

this looks so difficult to do! :P i would have died :p well done to you and the mini one xx

the salad looks so yummy!

Cel said...

That looks like quite a workout for sure, but I would so climb it. I do find it a little odd how open and exposed everything is. When I go up a mountain here, it's rolling forested hills are far as the eye can see most of the time, not cities and sea! Oh the world is so vast :) For some reason I always pictured mini-she as being well... mini haha... Your being the same height was a surprise!

oomph. said...

yes, stay away from these stairs unless you want to have that baby tomorrow!! i did a small hike and had mini-she the next day!!
