an [oomph.] review. Contours Rx Lids By Design.

having single eyelids, my sisters and i grew up admiring and wishing for double eyelids. makeup application seemed easier, and our eyes just might look a little bigger...right? some friends we knew got surgery to create their folds, but it never seemed natural, and sometimes it was uneven! none of us wanted the risky surgery, and i remember my sister trying everything, first using eyelid tape before moving on to [eyelash] glue.

Contours Rx is the creator of non-surgical beauty enhancements, like Lids by Design, which are great alternatives to risky surgery. Lids by Design is medical grade, hypo-allergenic eye lift strips used to correct sagging, drooping, puffy, or asymmetrical lids. with six different sizes, you can correct with a slight 3mm lift to a dramatic 8mm lift.

to use, simply apply strips to clean dry lids using the tweezers provided. hold in place with fingers for at least 30 seconds, and that's it!

(4mm strips used in the left photo, natural lids on the right.)

my single eyelids (or monolids) have a very slight crease but no distinct fold. depending on how tired or puffy my lids are in the morning, sometimes there's no crease at all, or it might only be on one side. Lids by Design allows me to define my crease and create a fold. you can see the subtle yet distinct double lids in the photos above. it definitely takes some practice, but you can use one set to practice with, then use brand new strips for your final look.

if you need to apply makeup, use this primer pencil to create a base over the strips and prepare them for makeup. i only tried this pencil once, but it seemed to "hilight" and expose the strips. i will definitely need more practice with the primer.

my overall thoughts is that this is an excellent alternative to surgery. you will get instant results that make you look and feel good about yourself.

have you tried Lids by Design? would you consider surgery?
tell me your thoughts.

colourpop haul + review.

i've loved colourpop since their humble beginnings two years ago. i started my "collection" with 3-4 lippies and their matching lippie stix. when i placed my order this time, i was running low on a few other items, so i decided to try some of their other products. here's what i received:

- echo park ultra satin lip
- aquarius lippie
- ellarie lippie
- banging brunette brow pencil
- get leid blush
- between the sheets blush
- no shame creme gel colour
- shadow to-a-t
- weho mini gloss (promo)
-piranha mini gloss (promo)
- finders keepers mini gloss (promo)

wearing echo park ultra satin lip +
creme gel color (eggplant-color eyeliner)

my thoughts:

the retractable brow pencil was soft and applied smooth, but the color was too dark for my preference. i do still use on occasion, but a bit too severe for everyday. i definitely recommend, but i just happen to fall in between the blonde and brunette shades.

i had high hopes for the creme gel colour, but the formula is very dry/drying. it's not very forgiving if you are messy or make mistakes during application. it became so dry and hard on my lids that it changed my eye shape! it was like i was wearing tape on my lids which gave me a double eyelid. will not repurchase.

the ultra satin lip was definitely my favorite. the formula is very liquidy and the applicator picks up a lot of product...i have to wipe off excess product several times before applying, but it feels nice on the lips and is not drying. it's long wearing; i usually don't have to reapply throughout most of the day.

the classic lippies are always great. they apply well, smell good, and look nice. i did begin to notice that they are a little drying, so i usually don't reapply since they may make my lips peel.

the shadows and blushes look amazing in their pots but don't have much pigmentation. you really have to use a lot of product or apply heavily with your fingers as they sometimes recommend. i still like them, though, as i don't wear heavy makeup. i can layer up for more color if need. i thought get leid was going to be way too bright, but i actually like it better than the mauve.

what's your favorite colourpop product?

an [oomph] review. irresistible me diamond flat iron.

we always want what we don't have. as a kid, i had stick-straight asian hair. wanting curly hair, i remember trying to perm it a few times. that didn't work.

fast forward five years to intermediate school, and i now had slightly wavy hair with a bit of a frizz. now i wished it were straight.

i've been ironing my hair ever since with either a curling iron or a flat iron. i was provided a Diamond Professional Flat Iron to review. its features and my thoughts are below.

this next-generation flat iron uses diamond hi-tech which coats its ceramic plates with crushed diamonds mixed with tourmaline. it claims to protect hair by retaining oils and moisture, and will provide longer-lasting styling against humidity and stress.

you can see the many features listed on the box above.

pros:
- adjustable temperature (up to 450 degrees F)
- super quick heat up (literally less than a minute)
- swivel cord (easy to move around)
- power/control buttons on inside (you won't accidentally turn it off or mess with heat settings)
- comfortable design (fits nicely in hand)

cons:
- auto shut off after 30 minutes. (mornings are a rush. sometimes i turn it on while doing other things to get ready. then when i'm ready to iron, i'll realize my hair is not getting flat...because it had turned off!)
- my iron doesn't close completely (there's a little gap, so you have to grab bigger sections of hair, which can take longer to straighten)
- although the plates are smooth to the touch, it doesn't glide smoothly along the hair for some reason.

before...washed and air-dried.
  after.

i don't like my hair too flat, so using a mid-range heat setting of 350, i'm able to iron out the slight waves in my hair while keeping some volume. in terms of frizz, i didn't feel that it kept my hair frizz-free longer. it is extremely humid here, and some days i felt as though my hair frizzed out as soon as i went outside.

overall, i liked the diamond flat iron and would recommend it to others. i can't say the diamond technology made my hair feel or look more shiny (compared to when using other flat irons), but it performed by straightening my hair.

the diamond flat iron retails for $149 but is on (labor day) sale for $112!

east vs west style. beauty.

time flies when you're having fun! it's the final week of this [fall 2014] east vs west series, and we're signing off with beauty. your lips and nails are the finishing touches to your outfit. there are four key colors that carry me throughout the fall season...a nude, a pink, a classic red, and a dark shade like plum or black.

LAQA & Co. has me covered with their lip pencils and nail polishes. their fat lip pencils have great pigmentation and never need sharpening (bonus!), while their nail polishes pack a punch of color in just one coat.

i hope that you enjoyed this fall edition of our east vs west series. what was your favorite trend?

as always, a huge thanks to our amazing sponsors.

a week of beauty. makeup routine.

ending this week of beauty with my current makeup routine. i used to have oily skin, and i did everything i could to get that powdery matte finish. i used oil-free everything, blotted, and powdered my nose every chance i had. now my skin is sensitive, dry, and eczema-prone, and i'm doing everything i can to get that moisture back into my skin.

so i recently changed my tried and true routine, switching to a liquid foundation and limiting my use of powders.
here's the current:

face

**i usually use mary kay creme-to-powder foundation, i'm really liking this one from l'oreal.

**i normally use laura mercier foundation powder and love it. they changed their formula and were out of my color, so sephora recommended make up forever. i prefer laura mercier. has anyone tried the new formula?
***i only powder in the morning...no more touchups throughout the day unless absolutely necessary.

eyes
anastasia beverly hills brow gel - caramel (forgot to put this in the picture)
anastasia beverly hills - she wears it well palette
anastasia beverly hills - want you to want me palette
maybelline gel eyeliner - blackest black
l'oreal voluminous mascara - blackest black

**i forgot to include a picture of the anastasia brow gel.
***love this mascara.

cheeks
jordana blush - terra cotta

*this bronzer is too dark for me, but i'm using it up with a light hand.

lips
as for my lips, i use everything and anything. i have been loving avon ultra color lipsticks and would love to try YSL and tom ford.

a week of beauty. skin care routine.

whenever i try out a new product, i like to use it exclusively so that i can tell if it's working. unfortunately, that means other products are pushed aside, and i hate letting good product sit [especially] after it is opened. so once i am comfortable with a product, i will throw it into the mix.

today, i'll be sharing a few skin care products and systems i currently have on hand and how i found a way to incorporate all of them into my everyday routine.

one thing is key for any skin care product or system...consistency. you have to be willing to put in the time and effort to see results. give it a chance to work, then decide whether it's right for you.

Mary Kay TimeWise
my mom is a long time user of mary kay. every gift from her is usually mary kay products which i'm happy to receive. for christmas, she gave me these three from the TimeWise collection.

i always hear great things about the clarisonic mia, so i was excited to try this skinvigorate cleansing brush. it has two speed settings, gently massages as it deep cleans the skin, and allows skin products to absorb better.

to use, i applied the 3-in-1 cleanser to my face then used the brush on low speed in circular motions on my t-zone area. the bristles are super soft on the skin, yet it feels invigorating while you are cleansing. unfortunately, my face would be tender for several hours after that. i continued to use the brush for a few weeks before realizing that it's just too much stimulation for my extremely sensitive skin. i continue to use it on my neck and chest areas. i still recommend it if you do not have sensitive skin. i think it would be a great alternative to the clarisonic mia ($100+).

the cleanser is wonderful. it has micro beads that help exfoliate, plus it rinses clean leaving your skin feeling refreshed and soft. i use it every night and follow up with the moisture renewing gel mask twice a week. it can be used as a 10-minute mask or left on overnight - i leave on overnight because i'm too lazy to rinse it off. the next morning i rinse it off with warm water (no face wash needed) and my face feels smooth and hydrated.

VIVO Per Lei Dead Sea Minerals
 - Facial Peeling, $100
ok, have you ever been approached by salespersons from this kiosk? you know the ones that say they just need a quick minute to show you something amazing? they might also ask what product you use on your face or if you regularly get manicures. they might compliment you, but most times they are aggressive and downright rude. you may walk away feeling offended, but don't take it personally. they do this to everyone. (i have two funny stories about my experiences at the kiosk, but i'll spare you since this post is already lengthy.)

bottom line is that if they didn't force you to sample their product, you'd never know how good it was.

after cleansing with the mary kay 3-in-1, i massage this in using circular motions to exfoliate dead skin. i love the visible results of this product. the place that surprised me the most? the skin under your eyebrows! scrub those eyebrows, ladies - lots of dead skin there.

getting rid of those layers of dead skin will allow other products to better penetrate the skin.

i use the facial peeling twice a week, then follow up with the moisturizing day cream (it's on the heavy side, so i use overnight).

*     *     *
Rodan & Fields - Proactiv
- Proactiv Solution 30-day supply, $24.95
as a teen, i didn't have horrible acne. i'd have the occasional breakout which was manageable with over the counter spot treatments. i did, however, experience some adult acne a few years ago and decided to give proactiv a try. with all the positive testimonials, it had to work, right? right. this stuff works.

you won't see results overnight, but consistency is key! once you start using the system, your skin will begin to purge all the toxins that are beneath the surface. meaning, your skin condition may get worse before it gets better. this is when people freak out, think the product isn't working for them, and switch. do. not. stop. acne treatments speed up the exfoliation process; all of these soon-to-be breakouts that are already waiting under the skin will surface sooner. once all of those impurities are gone, the treatment can do its job of healing the skin and preventing new breakouts.

i used the 3-step Proactiv solution morning and night everyday for almost a year. i saw results after 2-3 months, and my skin was clear after 5-6 months. now that my skin is stable and back to normal, i use the renewing cleanser just for maintenance on the mornings i'm not washing off a mary kay mask or vivo cream.

some people have said that this system is too strong and drying for them. Rodan & Fields has a new line called Proactiv+ which combines acne treatment with skin care benefits. it has more medicine plus built-in hydration for a gentle and effective treatment. just like we have all-in-one BB and CC creams...this would be like the BB/CC version of acne treatments!

*     *     *
First Aid Beauty

and finally, on the nights that i'm not using any of the above products, i slather on this heavy cream after cleansing with mary kay. i purchased this for my eczema prone skin because it hydrates and soothes without further irritating my skin.

have you tried any of these products?
do you have a favorite skin care system or do you like to mix things up?
