east vs west style. new year's eve.

it's the final week of this holiday edition of east vs west style, and we're signing off with what to wear on new year's eve. most times (with kids) it's a night in with family, eating and drinking as we watch the ball drop in times square on tv. but when we do go out, you can bet i'll be in something sparkly.

last year i went with a pretty gold sequinned dress, so i decided to go with this silver beaded comoroso dress by parker this year. the looser fit lets you...er, let loose, without having to worry about sucking in your gut all night. best of all, this dress is a rental from The Stylist LA, a designer dress borrowing service. no need to spend loads of money on a dress you'll likely never wear again. with The Stylist LA, you have access to hundreds of dresses so you never have to worry about wearing the same dress twice.

east vs west style. holiday hostess.

while i love visiting friends and seeing their decorated-for-the-holidays homes, sometimes the responsibility of hosting a holiday get together falls in my lap. i love to entertain and love [even more] the idea of everyone getting dressed up...BUT ask hawaii people to dress up and they'll show up in their "good" t-shirt and shorts. #TRUTH

so here i am in my "good" tee and shorts. the material of these jacquard snake print shorts have silver fibers which are really pretty and festive. i'm wearing these ah-mazing tailored boots 'cause it's my party and i can wear them if i want to (plus you have to be prepared to make an ice or wine run!). and when the air gets cooler at night, i'll layer up with this faux leather vest.

what do you wear as holiday hostess?

i've never had boots that fit my calves. at DUO, you can tailor your boots to fit. it doesn't get any better than that. oh wait, it does....they are super comfortable, too! LOVE.

east vs west style. holiday shopping.

during the holidays, it's all about multi-tasking to get things done. if i'm having drinks or dinner with friends after work, i'll try to meet up at a restaurant at the mall so that i can grab a few gifts before or after.

i've been loving comfy sweatshirts lately, and this pretty blue sequined one is equally sporty and festive. it's likely i would be wearing black pants or a pencil skirt at the office before swapping either out for something more comfy like these leather shorts. after cocktails when i'm ready to shop, i'll pull out the crossbody straps from my clutch, throw on my sneakers, and power shop before heading home.

how do you get things done during the holidays?

east vs west style. holiday party.

now that thanksgiving has passed, it's starting to feel like christmas. driving around the neighborhood this weekend, the night air was crisp and cool, and many of the houses were starting to put up their christmas lights and decorations. and you know what that means...holiday parties!

the ladies and i are back with a holiday edition of east vs west style, and we're kicking it off with what to wear to your holiday parties. black doesn't have to be boring. play around with layers, textures, and prints to create a look that will stand out in the crowd.

figuring out what to wear to a holiday party can be stressful. you're already worried about your grab bag gift, your dish or wine selection, and you might be on a budget with all the christmas gifts you have yet to buy. your work wardrobe can provide a great base for an outfit.

for me, it's this leopard print pencil skirt and tank top that i always wear to the office topped off with this beautiful faux leather drape cardigan from Karen Kane. it's slightly textured and has a pretty sheen to it that makes it feel festive. i'm also loving the ruched sleeves that show off your jewelry [and flash tats] without having to roll up your sleeves.

when the holidays are over, this cardigan will fit right into my work wardrobe...and that's what i call a great investment.

east vs west style. beauty.

time flies when you're having fun! it's the final week of this [fall 2014] east vs west series, and we're signing off with beauty. your lips and nails are the finishing touches to your outfit. there are four key colors that carry me throughout the fall season...a nude, a pink, a classic red, and a dark shade like plum or black.

LAQA & Co. has me covered with their lip pencils and nail polishes. their fat lip pencils have great pigmentation and never need sharpening (bonus!), while their nail polishes pack a punch of color in just one coat.

i hope that you enjoyed this fall edition of our east vs west series. what was your favorite trend?

as always, a huge thanks to our amazing sponsors.

a little sparkle never hurts either...loving this ring set from INPINK and the sparkly clutch from Lulu's.
l to r: lambchop, nookie, ring of fire, plonk
lambchop and nookie are the perfect shades of bright pink, ring of fire is a bright red, and plonk is a beautiful deep reddish-brown.

east vs west style. boots.

boots, boots, boots! another fall favorite that needs no introduction. i love the mix of styles here from stiletto booties to knee high boots.

when i selected this outfit weeks ago, we were experiencing unusually warm and humid weather. so i opted for shorts instead jeans. then on the day of shooting, we were hit with hurricane ana's non-stop rain. perfect weather for the outfit (and the would-have-been-jeans), not so much for photographing it.

this mixed media sweater is the second basic black sweater i added to my wardrobe this fall. i have been wearing it constantly because it is thin and slightly oversized, perfect for throwing on over denim like these Dittos misty cutoffs.

and this cozy beige infinity scarf kept me super warm. it was like being wrapped up in a blanket.

photographing in the rain was a total fail...the umbrella was not a wanted and intentional prop! plus, my hair was starting to frizz, haha.

luckily, i happened to snap a few photos of the outfit last week as part of my 'week of' series. i hadn't received the scarf and shorts yet, but at least these photos are clear and free of rain!

love the mesh details at the shoulders.

east vs west style. oversized knits.

this week's trend is definitely my favorite. i wear oversized sweaters year round, and i look forward to fall as an excuse to add a few new ones to the wardrobe. surprisingly, i've never owned a plain black sweater, so this one made sense. i'll definitely get a lot of wear out of this versatile sweater.

hope you've been enjoying the series so far. what's been your favorite week?

what do you wear with a simple black sweater? fun two-tone denim, cute quilted heels, a bucket bag for a boho vibe, and a fall hat to top it all off.
