transitioning to fall.

fall has finally arrived here on the islands...this week i actually felt chilly in bed and needed my blankets. and while we'll never pack away the shorts in hawaii, there is a way to transition into fall by pairing shorts with a blazer or light jacket.

it's been another wet and rainy week here, and while some rain may be good, too much can be bad for crops. i went to the farmer's market this weekend hoping to pick up my usual kale salad ingredients, and there was none. zilch. nada. because of the rain.

do you frequent your farmer's markets?
what summer items are you transitioning to fall?

early morning trips to the farmer's market always end with breakfast.

how to wear red white and blue. 01

the fourth of july is coming and that means three things...bbq, beach, and beverages red, white, and blue! i found this chambray shirt dress in my friendship swap bag and thought it would be the perfect backdrop for pops of red and white. a subtle way to show my patriotism.

this weekend, we hiked up diamond head at high noon. it was so hot. we definitely didn't plan it that way, it just happened. it was also crowded and there was no parking on site, so we had to park far and walk. i really didn't mind the extra distance...if only it weren't so hot. super proud of mini-he; this hike was probably a bit much for him, but he made it to the top.

if you're in the US, do you rock red, white, and blue for the 4th?
how was your weekend?

ugh...more stairs!
loved the tunnels...respite from the sun!
view from the top...did you catch it on periscope?
he made it!

jail bird.

striped dresses used to be my thing. i couldn't get enough of them. maybe because they were simple and didn't require much else...a pair of sneaks and a crossbody bag + simple jewelry and you're set for a day of running around. have a great weekend!

what are you running around in?
did you have a thing?

#FBF to this yummy gelato from via gelato. 1/2 strawberry cheesecake, 1/2 snickerdoodle. the snickerdoodle was so yummy!

quick hello.

just dropping in to say a quick hello. i had a race on sunday which left little time (and energy) to take photos for the blog. i do my best to plan ahead for those weeks, but you know how that goes...so bear with me during the week following my races

the second week of east vs west is coming up tomorrow - check back to see what trend we're rocking. plus i have a neat giveaway that's perfect for the upcoming holidays and a recap of sunday's race. stay tuned!

how are you today?

food truck mania.

food trucks have been gaining popularity ever since food network's show [the great food truck race] debuted. in fact, season 4's winner was a team from hawaii. food trucks even have their own event here, eat the street, that pops up in different cities throughout the month. i've been wanting to check it out but was always turned off by the parking and crowds. last week, on a whim, we finally went...the minis wanted to go, it was summer, and we were hungry. details and pics below.

i grabbed this super cheap tee so that i could change out of my work clothes before heading to eat the street. and what did i do? dribble bright yellow [nacho] cheese all down the front, haha.

do you like to eat at food trucks?
are they popular where you live?

the wow wow lemonade lines. this is the one thing the minis wanted, so...
20 minute wait for $10 lemonade in a mason jar.
$6 refills (save that jar for next time!)

the crowd. must get there early. the lines were ridiculously long by the time we got there, so i didn't get to try everything i wanted to.
wow wow lemonade strawberry/classic lemonade | pop pop donuts, $5/doz. w/salted caramel & spicy nutella sauces | hawaiian twisted tater, $10 tater tray w/ kahlua pork, chill, cheese, green onions & ranch dressing.

this is what we came away with plus a couple bentos, ribs, poke bowl, and macarons not shown. the twisted tater is spiral cut potatoes with toppings. it's essentially like a baked potato, but nacho style. it was pretty good; i'd eat it again. can't say the same for the pop pop donuts.

a week of summer shorts + shoes pairings. highest heels.

school's out, summer's here!

on the weekends, i live in my denim shorts. hitting the beach, pool, or park at some point in our day is a given, and the last thing i want to worry about is getting nice clothes dirty or looking like a wrinkled mess after the beach...which is why i always resort to denim.

but it's likely that i'll also meet up with friends or family for lunch, shopping, drinks, or coffee, and i always have trouble finding the right shoes for dressing up my denim shorts. i'm kicking summer off with a week of shorts + shoes pairings for outfits that can take you from beach to wherever in the summer.

i love wearing heels, but pairing them with shorts can be tricky. i have a general rule which is the higher the heels, the longer the shorts. these knee-length DIY denim cut-offs are my faves when i want to wear my highest heels. they are fitted and cut off at the skinniest point on my legs. i balanced them out with this over-sized boyfriend shirt that doubles as the perfect beach cover-up.

what is your summer uniform?

i kicked off the weekend helping out at a golf tournament serving drinks at the 10th hole. it was a beautiful day, the sun was out, it was hot...it definitely felt like summer.

rainy season.

happy veteran's day to all who served and serve today.

a few years ago, my office swapped veteran's day for black friday, so i'm stuck at the office today. it's ok, though, i like quiet days at the office. this weekend was rainy, windy, and cold...yay! i can finally break out the scarves and make use of all of my sweaters.

how did you spend the day?

the wedge sneaker.

there are some trends you just gotta have.
there are ones you can't see yourself wearing. ever.
and there are those you feel lukewarm about and wait to see if they grow on you...like the wedge sneaker. i actually liked some of the original sneakers that first hit the scene but wasn't willing to pay their $600 price tags. so i waited.

sure enough, along came JustFab's Keena shoe with a much friendlier price tag. now that i've tried them, i'm a believer. they give just enough lift to lengthen the legs without being uncomfortable. now, why did i wait this long?

are you a fan of wedge sneakers?
if so, how do you rock yours?

nooooo...where has mini-he gone?
i begged him not to look into the light!
stay tuned to see if he returns.
