transitioning to fall.

fall has finally arrived here on the islands...this week i actually felt chilly in bed and needed my blankets. and while we'll never pack away the shorts in hawaii, there is a way to transition into fall by pairing shorts with a blazer or light jacket.

it's been another wet and rainy week here, and while some rain may be good, too much can be bad for crops. i went to the farmer's market this weekend hoping to pick up my usual kale salad ingredients, and there was none. zilch. nada. because of the rain.

do you frequent your farmer's markets?
what summer items are you transitioning to fall?

early morning trips to the farmer's market always end with breakfast.

peek a boo lace.

comfort is key around here. i'm wearing my favorite black cardigan and these comfy shorts from Patty's Closet. black is so effortless...just incorporate texture and details as with these gauzy shorts with lace trim.

i spent the weekend on kauai. it was a quick trip for mini-she's volleyball, but we managed to squeeze in some sight-seeing and a lot of eating. part one of kauai pics below.

how was your weekend? did you travel this summer?

on the plane: always look forward to reading hana hou!
first stop: po's kitchen for breakfast bento boxes on the go.
we headed straight to waimea canyon...did you catch it on periscope?
water was flowing down the red dirt hills.
drove thru hanapepe for ono taro chips before heading to the hotel.

whites + brights.

happy prime day!
if you haven't heard, amazon prime members get exclusive access to deals today. i heard the deals are even better than black friday's deals. to sweeten the day, walmart is jumping on this opportunity to snag some customers by hosting their own rollback deals. it's a battle of sales that's definitely worth checking out.

i found this top in my recent friendship swap bag and automatically thought of pairing it with white to freshen up the colors. it's been extremely humid here, so shorts have been the only option lately.

how's your summer weather?

last weekend we hit up Kit n Kitchen, a restaurant that specializes in spaghetti. i came here years ago when they first opened and haven't been back until now. i enjoyed the food then, and it was pretty good this time again.
chicken and mushrooms in a mixed cream sauce.
this is their signature pillow toast swerved with sweet cream and maple syrup + a scoop of ice cream, which we had for dessert. we also had their garlic pillow toast with our dinner.

hair today gone tomorrow.

last year i started to take hawaiian astaxanthin while training for the marathon. it is a powerful antioxidant that supports joint and tendon health, among other things, recommended for helping muscles recover quickly after long runs. what i didn't expect was hair growth.

since my hair was always up while running, i never realized just how long it was getting. but, seriously, look at all this hair. this growth together with my ability to majorly procrastinate on scheduling [hair] appointments meant constant headaches from my increasingly heavy locks.

i have been know to chop off my own hair out of frustration, and oops, i did it again. here today, gone tomorrow.

details in black.

texture and details add oomph to this otherwise plain black sweater from Fevrie. i love simple and unfussy pieces, and this top is one you can throw on with jeans and heels for an easy yet pulled together look.

scenes from the weekend below.

after a long hiatus, they brought back a carnival to our neighborhood...so we went to show our support and get our fill of carnival food.

after four months of late-night rehearsals, we finally got to see mini-she on stage at opening night of her school play. she did great...i'm so proud of her.

bittersweet arrival of UO.

the first and only times i set foot in urban outfitters was about seven years ago when i was on vacay in california. we probably went to three different stores, and i was in heaven each time. the stores were filled to the brim with all kinds of goodness; i was literally that kid in a candy store. i wanted everything.

its arrival here was bittersweet since they are in waikiki. as with other stores that came to waikiki (h&m, forever 21), the likelihood of me going down there just to shop is slim to none. but last week, i attended a class held at a hotel in waikiki, so i made sure to check out our very first urban outfitters.

do you like urban outfitters?
is there a store near you?

i was a little bummed about the clothes - nothing exciting, a lot of the same thing spread out around the store. i was also super bummed about their home section (or lack of, i should say). that was one of the areas i loved when i visited in california.

but i loved their beauty and make up section which was fully stocked with anastasia of beverly hills products, among other cool brands. sephora has limited products, but UO had most of her line. they also had tony moly products which i've only seen online before.

thumbs up for their swimsuit selection, bags, and shoes. lots of cute styles.

overall, i like the store. everyone was friendly and helpful. hopefully there will be a new crop of clothes the next time i'm in the area.

happy national drink wine day.

for all you wine lovahs, today is national drink wine day. for those who didn't know (it's ok, i didn't know either...shame on me!), it is always celebrated on February 18th. i couldn't find any true historical meaning behind this day other than to simply rejoice and enjoy your favorite wines. so...go ahead, grab your glass. [virtual] cheers!

in spirit of the day, scroll down for some wine facts, fun gadgets, favorite sayings, and must-haves.

what is your favorite wine?
do you like red or white?

8 health benefits of drinking wine:

i drink red wine, mostly.
while i prefer a good cabernet, i do not discriminate.
i'll try anything once, but here's what i usually find myself reaching for time and time again:

jordan cabernet, $50
ghost pines cabernet, $20
P|K|N|T. cabernet, pinot noir, merlot, $10

must-haves:
aerator for when you don't have time to let wine breathe.
a great bottle opener - rabbit is by far the easiest.
stemless wine glasses = less accidents.
a wine refrigerator.
