details in black.

texture and details add oomph to this otherwise plain black sweater from Fevrie. i love simple and unfussy pieces, and this top is one you can throw on with jeans and heels for an easy yet pulled together look.

scenes from the weekend below.

after a long hiatus, they brought back a carnival to our neighborhood...so we went to show our support and get our fill of carnival food.

after four months of late-night rehearsals, we finally got to see mini-she on stage at opening night of her school play. she did great...i'm so proud of her.

the [updated] black blazer.

rediscovering my love of black as well as having an appreciation for simplicity, i've been updating my wardrobe with neutral pieces in varying textures. mornings run smoothly when i can confidently grab separates that i know will work together and look good together.

this textured blazer has a form-fitting shrunken fit, different from the oversized shapeless black blazers i've worn in the past. layered here over my favorite leather tank top, the textures give this otherwise simple black on black mix enough visual interest to get noticed.

i'm also rocking love & sunshine's newest design...
the crossbody bag.

how do you simplify getting dressed in the morning?

a week of work wardrobe basics: dark denim.

another must-have in your work wardrobe is a pair of dark denim jeans. it's acceptable in most offices and looks polished and professional compared to lighter washes. invest in a good pair, and you will always have something to wear. this has been the go-to item in my closet because of its versatility. i'm wearing it here with a crisp, white shirt (also on my list) for a simple and classic outfit. a bold necklace and fun bag keep it from looking too much like a uniform.

two things to consider:
fit and style: a trouser style or boot cut works well. it should be fitted through the leg with a flare that allows the jean to fall nicely over your shoes without bunching. a skinny jean works, too, as long as it isn't too tight at the ankles. opt for one with a mid to high rise waist, and it should be fitted, not tight.
design: none! plain, non-descript, dark denim is best. the more embellishments it has, the less versatile (and office appropriate) it becomes.

i've had this pair for the life of this blog! here's the proof in one of my first posts! it's finally starting to fade...time to start looking for a replacement.

hep pep.

what a weekend! ours was jam-packed with activities which i'll share throughout the week, but first let's talk about superbowl sunday. we always have parties because it's also my nephew's birthday. this year was exciting because 1) i actually watched the game, 2) i almost understood what was going on, and 3) there was some monetary prizes involved (i won nothing!). i did catch some (friendly) $hit on instagram from 49ers fans after posting the photo of mini-he below. i am clueless about football, therefore i am not partial to any team. but, for the sake of having some friendly competition in the house,
i usually root for the underdog.

finally. peplum.
been wanting to try this trend for a while. it's more fluff and florals than i'm used to wearing, but i kind of liked it
with black [accessories].

did you watch the superbowl? how do you feel about peplum?

mini-he helping with the party decorations (and we did have 49ers stuff too!)...he did an amazing job cutting and coloring. way to go, mini!

hi my name is.

just a few snaps of what i wore to my reunion this weekend.
it was nice to catch up with a few good friends that i've lost touch with over the years. but in general, everyone made their obligatory rounds [to say hello], then gravitated back to their table of friends. it seemed that people were less willing to approach each other this year...or maybe they just didn't approach me. i always feel like people don't remember or recognize me, although my friends say i look the same. in any case, it was an excuse to get out and i had a great time.

my outfit is made up of pieces from a few local boutiques that i frequent and was literally put together at the 11th hour...the blouse being the last thing i picked up...after work...
on my way to the reunion.

DID YOU...

feels so good.

notice anything different?
my nails are painted!
i stopped painting them for a while because of mini-he, but couldn't resist any longer. i'm just loving bubble gum pinks.
i didn't have the exact shade i was hoping for, but mini-she had something similar. it was pretty sheer, so i had to use three coats to achieve this color. if you are craving bubble gum, too, here are some similar shades that i love:

i'm also wearing the mark flip-over reversible skirt that
i talked about here. i'll have to make some alterations because it's a few sizes too big, but the style is
just what i've been looking for.

any big plans for the weekend?

it's official...the holiday season is here! starbucks says so.
