back to business. work outfit.

i was thrilled to find this dress at Patty's Closet. with summer coming to a close, it was a great find to get my mind back into work mode. this LBD has great texture, a cute square back (which i didn't get a photo of), and it's the perfect office-appropriate length.

are you ready for summer to end?

a week of spring dressing. dark florals.

who says spring has to be all about the brights? if you tend to shy away from bright florals, take on spring with neutrals. remember, it's more important to feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing, so go on and rock black this spring! i'm all about spring lips, tho...wearing creamy lip pencils 'toots' with a bit of 'shambolic' from LAQA & Co. if you prefer more shine, they just released four new lip lubes which have a high-gloss and lightly pigmented formula...perfect for summer when we tend to lighten up our makeup.

today is mini-he's birthday. of course, i was up all night making friggen cupcakes for his class, but i think they turned out alright despite the color printer malfunction. he's all about that minecraft, so these are supposed to be dirt/grass blocks in case ya didn't know. yeah, yeah, they're supposed to be dirt on the bottom, grass on the top, but this mama ain't got time for green frosting!

how do you feel about wearing black this spring?

sweatshirt + pencil skirt.

during these summer weekends, i live comfortably and casually in swimsuits, denim cutoffs, and loose tees, tanks, and sweatshirts...and when monday comes, i can't help but try to squeeze in a few casual days at the office. i swap out clingy silk blouses for comfy cotton tees and sweatshirts, like this leopard one. paired with a pencil skirt, it still feels weekend-comfy yet looks office appropriate.

a few weekend snaps below.

how was your weekend?
what are you looking forward to this week?

style me. striped maxi skirt.

reader request:
my sister bought a black and white striped maxi skirt similar to this one and needed ideas on how to wear it to work.
"style me!!" she said. so here are my thoughts:
since she is in a management position, she should continue to look professional even on casual days. my suggestion is to pair her striped maxi skirt with a shrunken blazer that is structured and short in length. the shorter length balances the maxi and keeps the look from being too frumpy. i might also pair it with silky button-ups or crisp white shirts that are tucked
in and belted.

her skirt has thin stripes and almost looks solid black from afar, which works out better for the office. this is the only striped maxi skirt i have, but you get the idea.

maxi + tank + blazer

maxi + crisp white shirt

maxi + long-sleeved dolman tee

maxi + peplum top

maxi + peplum top + blazer

tips for keeping your maxi skirt office appropriate:
- avoid loose oversized tops which can look sloppy and too casual
- skirt should cover shoes without touching the ground
- keep the outfit simple and unfussy
- stick to [dark] basic colors
- avoid large prints

a week of work wardrobe basics: dark denim.

another must-have in your work wardrobe is a pair of dark denim jeans. it's acceptable in most offices and looks polished and professional compared to lighter washes. invest in a good pair, and you will always have something to wear. this has been the go-to item in my closet because of its versatility. i'm wearing it here with a crisp, white shirt (also on my list) for a simple and classic outfit. a bold necklace and fun bag keep it from looking too much like a uniform.

two things to consider:
fit and style: a trouser style or boot cut works well. it should be fitted through the leg with a flare that allows the jean to fall nicely over your shoes without bunching. a skinny jean works, too, as long as it isn't too tight at the ankles. opt for one with a mid to high rise waist, and it should be fitted, not tight.
design: none! plain, non-descript, dark denim is best. the more embellishments it has, the less versatile (and office appropriate) it becomes.

i've had this pair for the life of this blog! here's the proof in one of my first posts! it's finally starting to fade...time to start looking for a replacement.

a week of work wardrobe basics: pencil skirt.

another staple in my work wardrobe is a black pencil skirt.
it functions the same as black pants, but allows you to show off your feminine curves...and your shoes. i'm wearing simple black pumps (also on my list), but switch them out for a colorful, strappy pair and you have an outfit worthy of happy hour drinks.

two things to consider:
fita pencil skirt should be fitted but not tight. too loose,
and it'll spin around. too tight, and you'll be uncomfortable.
length: a pencil skirt should fall at or just below the knees.
too short, and you'll be tugging at it all day. plus, your knees are a "skinny" point in your silhouette. a skirt that hits at the knees will be slimming and give you that hourglass shape,
if you so desire.

invest in a good black one first, then explore
other fun prints and textures.

do you know who created the pencil skirt?

worn here with a simple creme blouse. add color to this neutral combo with a bright cardigan, colorful skinny belt, or fun bag.
to elongate: tuck in your blouses.
to further accentuate curves: pair with a peplum top.

french designer, christian dior, introduced the pencil skirt in the late 1940s using the term "H-line" (as opposed to A-line) to describe its straight and narrow shape. its predecessor, the hobble skirt, was created by another french designer, paul poiret, in the early 1900s. it was coined hobble because it literally hobbled the wearer with its slim hemlines.

the bold cuff.

bold cuff bracelets are all the rage this year.
this 2013 trend works with my resolution to simplify,
using a single cuff to accessorize my outfits.
one is all you need to make a statement.

dressing for work is a piece of cake with this black sheath dress.
it's an instant outfit and one that i always feel good in. plus, it transitions easily from day to night simply by swapping out your everyday bag for an evening clutch.

will you go bold with a statement cuff?

surplus.

this week's morning showers came just in time for me to rock my canvas military jacket from gap. i really wanted this olive one, but even the xs was really big. i'll keep searching for one while enjoying this one in the meantime. as you can see,
the sun usually comes out by mid-day, so pairing it with
shorter dresses keeps things cool.
