the perfect white shorts.

wow...it's been a while!
last we spoke, our office [of 15 years] was transitioning to a new location. it was a long process, but we are finally moved in and slowly getting settled. unfortunately, i spent most of my time in jeans + tees while packing and cleaning...nothing quite blog-worthy. now that there is some kind of normalcy, it feels great to get dressed again...although we are in a much different environment. while the old office was close to the beach, the new office is literally on the beach warranting much more casual attire.

i love the crispness of white. these shorts from express were the right length and fit that i wanted...paired with my favorite button-down + summer slippers = my perfect summer look.

what's your summer look?

marathon chronicles 12. reflection.

and just like that...it's over.

one year of running and 555 miles later, this year of fitness was a journey that will have a positive and [hopefully] lasting effect on my life. it's led to a healthier lifestyle that i've worked hard for, and i don't want to give that up.

training for a marathon is a huge commitment. i made a lot of sacrifices and learned a lot about the sport and about myself along the way.

what i learned about running:

- it truly is an individual sport.
it's great to have a running partner or group to keep you accountable, but there is this competitiveness inside of us that won't be held back. we understand the time and commitment it takes to train for a big race and wouldn't hold anyone back either. my friend and i train together but wish each other a great run on race day and take off at our own paces.

- you have to make it a lifestyle
as with anything else you do, you should be passionate about it. if you make it part of your lifestyle (vs a single goal you are trying to meet), the likelihood of you enjoying it and continuing on with it will be greater.

- there are no excuses.
you don't need someone to run with. you don't need a gym membership. just get out and run. i have a treadmill at home, so i couldn't blame it on the weather either.

- you don't need excessive gear or gadgets
as a new runner, it's easy to get caught up in the latest and greatest especially if you think it'll help you get through a run...the best socks, compression gear, running belts, supplements, tracking devices, etc. in the end, all you need is a great pair of shoes. i used non-running socks [from walmart!], the same top + shorts + hat for every race, a running app on my phone vs an expensive garmin watch that i still want, and shoved all my gels into my sports bra vs a fancy belt.

- flat running isn't always easier.
running is hard on the body, period. but flat running uses the same muscles over and over, and after an extended period of time, your body will feel it. after 10+ miles of flat road running in the marathon, the big hills were a welcomed change for my legs.

what i learned about myself:

- i can do anything i put my mind to.
(seriously, 26.2 miles?)

- i can wake up early.
i'm a night owl. i usually get to bed after midnight and hate waking up in the morning. i hit the snooze button more than i'd like to admit. but with 2am race-day wake up calls, i had to train myself not only to get up early, but to sleep early as well. by the end, i was waking up before my 2am alarm!

- i will go out in public without makeup...
when absolutely necessary.
i'm vain. i admit it. i usually don't leave the house without at least the bare minimum face. but, who'd take me seriously running with false lashes and bright lips?!

- i actually like running.
i used to experience shin splints that made running painful. after finding the right shoes, talking to other runners, and improving my running technique, i no longer get those nasty shin splints. now that i reached my goal for 2014, i still feel like i want to run...which means i must enjoy running, right?

- running is addictive...
i feel like i can do better.
this year was about completion. it was my first year running, so i didn't set any time goals for myself...i just wanted to cross that finish line. with a few races under my belt, i have a starting point from which i can now improve.

now that the marathon is over, everyone asks the question...

"would you do it again?"
maybe. running the marathon really wasn't that bad; it's the four month commitment during the busy holiday season that's holding me back at this point. i will definitely continue to do smaller races and even half marathons.

did i reach my goal of runner status?
i think so. i'm not the fastest, i don't have the best form, and i won't be winning medals any time soon, but i've come to enjoy the sport, i love the way i feel after each run, and look forward to the next time i can run...and by those measures, i can say i've reached runner status.

what did you accomplish this year?
do you have any goals for next year?

weekend style.

if there's one store i hit up on black friday, it's Express. the entire store is 50% off until noon, and i like that. most times i'll walk out of a store with a bag full of stuff that wasn't on sale (isn't that always the case?!), then wonder why i got up so early on a day off. at Express, it's a no brainer. i like knowing that whatever i grab is on sale. and if you're in the store before noon, you might even get a card that entitles you to two more hours of shopping at 50% off. but even if you miss all of that, the entire store is still 40% off for the rest of the day. Express, you rock! same time next year?

catch me on the weekends, and i'm usually in an outfit similar to this. button-up shirts are definitely my go-to because they create a look that's slightly more pulled together than shorts and a tee. if it's cold, i may swap out the shorts for jeans and throw on a utility jacket...then finish off the look with a hands-free crossbody bag.

what's your go-to weekend style?

studded camouflage.

i think i'm going crazy...
crazy for camouflage, that is.
the team at Patty's Closet in Windward Mall probably thought i was crazy for choosing a bunch of camouflage items, but they were too fun to pass up. leggings are tricky (i wrote about them here), but this one passed my test with its studded detail at the knees and busy pattern which camouflages, haha, unsightly bumps and bulges. plus, it seemed appropriate for all the chilly, big-sweater-and-leggings kind of nights soon to come. stay tuned for another fun camouflage piece coming up later this week.

stay in touch with Patty's Closet to see all of their new arrivals and join their text club to receive exclusive discounts. text 'pattys' to 75309.

i survived the 5-birthdays weekend, but it was enough to make me hit the treadmill again. i'm happy to report that i'm back to my midnight runs.

a week of work wardrobe basics: dark denim.

another must-have in your work wardrobe is a pair of dark denim jeans. it's acceptable in most offices and looks polished and professional compared to lighter washes. invest in a good pair, and you will always have something to wear. this has been the go-to item in my closet because of its versatility. i'm wearing it here with a crisp, white shirt (also on my list) for a simple and classic outfit. a bold necklace and fun bag keep it from looking too much like a uniform.

two things to consider:
fit and style: a trouser style or boot cut works well. it should be fitted through the leg with a flare that allows the jean to fall nicely over your shoes without bunching. a skinny jean works, too, as long as it isn't too tight at the ankles. opt for one with a mid to high rise waist, and it should be fitted, not tight.
design: none! plain, non-descript, dark denim is best. the more embellishments it has, the less versatile (and office appropriate) it becomes.

i've had this pair for the life of this blog! here's the proof in one of my first posts! it's finally starting to fade...time to start looking for a replacement.

purple satchel.

it's the bag you never knew you needed.
i kept coming back to this purple hudson bag from JustFab and finally decided to go for it. it exceeded my expectations of a suede-like bag. the quality is great for its price, the color is vibrant, it's lightweight, and the size is perfect...big enough to fit all the essentials, yet small enough to be considered a purse. i was worried about its versatility, but i've paired it with peach, blue, black, and now green and pink...it just works.

this is another crazy weekend for us. tomorrow, after our usual saturday classes, we're heading to my niece's school fair. this is when i let mini-he eat all the cotton candy he wants before letting him jump to his heart's content in the bounce houses. after that we have my daughter's athletic banquet,
and we finish off with mini-he's [flag football] championship
game on sunday.

what's going on in your neck of the woods?

to finish off last weekend's events, we spent two nights helping our neighbor make pasteles, and let me tell you, it's no easy task! from peeling green bananas, to grinding them, to chopping the meat, assembling them, and cooking them, a lot of work goes into these things. and after all that, i forgot to ask for
one to try! have you tried pasteles?

three down.

march is gone, and in looking back at my resolutions...
seems march madness got the best of me. not much to report except for a few new things that i tried. i made a brussel sprout salad, tried eos lip balm (which i'm liking so far), posted my first video on the blog, and told you about BlogGo, a new mobile app that i recently discovered.
i also caught up on a few reviews for the bloomsbury bag, the marne heels, and pearlescent denims from JustFab, and shared with you a few goodies from SilverSpeck - the blue topaz ring, the wishbone necklace, and the hoop earrings.

april is mini-he's birthday month. every. day. he asks me if it's his birthday. it's going to be a long two weeks.

how was your march? any big plans for april?

and mini-he had a few new firsts of his own:
-he made the cutest egg. he drew us, and we actually look like people...where before we used to be a head with four protruding lines for the limbs. he (now) explains that we have necks and that our arms come out of our necks.
-he decided that he likes (red) bell peppers
-he started reading

around town.

i always joke, saying that i was born in heels...i love wearing heels; i can jog, run, even sprint with heels (ok, maybe not
the last without risking a twisted ankle). but, with two active kids involved in lots of extracurricular activities, sometimes flats just make sense. so i'm always on the look out for oomph-worthy pairs to add to my shoedrobe. these animal print ones defnintely fit the bill. i look forward to wearing them with summer dresses and my new white denim.

treated the minis to acai bowls and pizza from jewel or juice after saturday's math class.
